Do beauty really matters in getting a certain job and earning more money? This study
Review in
One of the objectives of this study is to develop a probabilistic relation between the degree of physical attractiveness and the kind of job people choose to work in. Two main options are accounted for, jobs with a high component of interaction with people or jobs "having a primary task of People" and jobs with a high component of information processing or jobs "having a primary task of Information". Whether the degree of attractiveness is measured in a standardized scale or in a categorical fashion, the study is consistent in showing that increasingly attractive people will choose jobs with a highly component of interaction with people.
Another part of this study distiguishes between high and low skilled activities for both areas of work, people and information. Confirming results show that increasingly attractive people will choose to work in jobs with high and low skilled activities related to a strong interaction with people. Given that another determinant variable for the researchers is GPA, its effect over the election that people will make about what kind of job and what level of skillness they will develop has interesting observations. Basically, it is shown that increasingly inteligent people, with no regard to their level of physical attractivenes, will choose to be at jobs with high-skill requirements, in both areas, people and information, and will discard jobs characterized by a strong interaction with people but with an important content of low skilled activities.
When the study changes its model towards the salary as the dependent variable, the results show that when people work in high and low skilled activities with a strong interaction with people, being increasingly attractive will make their salary raise up, while when working in activities with a strong interaction with information, increasingly more attractive people will actually receive a lower salary. And we can consider them as average results in relation to the population of study, specifically the study uses data from Berea Panel Study, whose advantage over other similar panel databases is that it distiguishes with fair detail the working activities of people, which permits to make a highly comprehensive classification. In this and other aspects, this study constitutes an important contribution to the dicussion of beauty and other traits that have a role in getting, maintaining and develping a professional career.
